Calgary Oscars

So did I mention that I am moving to Calgary? Besides the rant? Cause I am. I am excited and nervous. But good nervous. Heather and I went down this weekend to check a few places out. She distracted me. A lot. I missed way to many exits on the trails. I am usually better at finding my way. We ended up going the long Liz way more often than the strait-there Charlene way. But thats ok, it was an adventure. Yes. Very excited. I only have 5 days of work left, including today. Oh and starting next week I may be away from the computer more than I want to be. Depends on when I can get a hookup at the new place. So I'm not dead, really. I'm just moving! And now for some Oscar randomness.
The Oscars were last night. They were pretty good. I wasnt as disapointed in Brokeback Mountain not winning as some people are, but then again I didn't really expect it to win best picture. As much as it was loved, America just isnt ready to nominate a movie about cowboy lovin as Best Picture. It will take a while yet before that happens. I did expect Ang Lee to win though. Thats about as best as they really were going to get. Some weird nomination? William Hurt and Michelle Williams? Weren't really that good. In fact I think Michelle was nominated for being the suffering wife of a gay cowboy, much like Jennifer Connoly won for A Beautiful Mind. Suffering wife, not that great of a performance. I thought the men did much better than the women in that movie. And Matt Dillon? He wasnt that great. Really. I wasn't amazed by his performance either.
The opening bit was funny. Much better than a song by Billy Crystal. It took a bit for the audience to warm up to Jon but he did a really good job. I laughed a lot. And holy crap is Salma Hayek hot! That dress? Perfect colour, perfect fit. George Clooney? So funny! Dan Futterman? Who knew he was a writer? Charlize Theron? What was with the shoulder poof? Wilson Brothers and Ben Stiller? Woo!! Rachel Weisz? Gorgeous.
It was also a really crap year for movies for me. I only saw 4 of the nominated movies, including Harry Potter. That sucks! I remember one year I saw all of the nominated movies! I will have to remedy that this year. I was listening to the radio on my drive back and they guy on the radio couldnt understand why you would "waste" 4 hours watching an award show. Well this is my reasoning. I don't do sports. I dont watch hockey or soccer or football. Movies is my thing. So the Oscars and the Golden Globes are like my Stanley Cup or the Grey Cup or the Superbowl. I watch movies all year and then once a year I get a 4 hour show honouring the best of them. Thats why I watch them.
