This is Liz: Point form is a great form

Point form is a great form

I watched a shitload of movies this weekend. My thoughts in point form.
  • The Pursuit of Happyness - This was a good movie. I see why Will Smith was nominated for an Oscar. He does the intense thing well. I find it endearing to see a father taking care of his children without a mother. Maybe it's because I don't see it very often in real life. I see more of the dad's buggering off and leaving the mothers to raise the kids. Also the Smith kid? Cute!
  • The Number 23 - I liked this one. I must not have been paying attention because I didn't see the ending until it was almost revealed. I was hoping it was the wife's friend, the professor guy. I really like Jim Carey in serious roles. In fact I prefer him in those roles. I find him really believable. In this one he was very believable as the crazy guy, locked in a hotel room, paranoia run rampant and scribbling all over the walls. What bugged me was that the couple (Carey & Madsen) just let their kid be a part of all this grown up stuff. Not that they should have left him out completely but taking him along to dig up a grave? That bugged me. And they named him Robin Sparrow? WTF? Poor kid.
  • Casino Royale - This was a pretty awesome movie. Daniel Craig was great as Bond, a good choice, much better than Brosnan (smarmy git). I don't remember much of the hype with this one, mostly vague notions that he was a human Bond. That he was fallible, that he bled etc. The fights were cool, the opening free running bit was cool, the car crash out of nowhere after Vesper (Vesper? I swore she was Vespa and he was teasing her for being named after a scooter.) was kidnapped. Near the end, when they had won the money, Bond was out of the hospital, I was thinking, "Wait? This is it? Well ok, it's the new Bond, I can deal with this ending" when it didn't end. The collapsing Venetian house was awesome, despite Spirit of the West's "And If Venice Is Sinking" going through my head. I also knew she was up to something when she apologized after Bond gave her the password. I was just expecting the betrayal sooner than it happened. All in all a great movie, can't wait for the next Craig!Bond movie.
  • Catch And Release - This was a pretty shitty movie. I am really wishy washy about how I feel about Jennifer Garner on any given day. I was virtually sea-sick with this movie. She was adorable, then nauseating then tolerable all within 15 minutes. Kevin Smith was, well, Kevin Smith, Timothy Olyphant was pretty to look at, Boulder was gorgeous (!!! Holy crap I want to move there!!!). The best thing about this movie was the house the 4 main characters lived in. She lived with her fiance's best friends, so 3 guys. The house looked like a normal house! It was messy and there was always dishes on the counter in the kitchen, and there was crap piled everywhere. It was really the most endearing part of the whole movie.
  • Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer - You know, I was willing to go with the flow on the first movie. I *heart* Ioan Gruffud and Chris Evans kind of reminds me of my brother ( do you see it? or am I on crack?). But this movie was much crappier than I expected. Did Sue Storm have such fake blue eyes in the first one? They were really distracting! I don't know why they bothered to cast Jessica Alba when they changed her hair, her voice, her eyes. Why not get like Kate Bosworth? The best part of this was the Silver Surfer himself. I always thought he was pretty cool, how he lost his shine when he lost his board. Oh and Galactus? When it was really close to sucking up the Earth? That was pretty awesome. The rest of the movie? Pretty crap.
  • Pride & Prejudice - This was the version with Keira Knightly and that guy from Spooks. I don't mind that girl. Sh
e has a very infectious grin. I have never seen a full version of this book/movie/whatever. I missed the BBC/Colin Firth version but I enjoyed this one. It is all just terribly romantic isn't it? Mr Darcy tromping across the moors (in some killer boots) to profess his love (again) to Miss Elizabeth. It also just blows my mind, the wanton abandon in trying to marry off your daughters. To marry a cousin? Really? Eww. Enjoyed this one, weeped quite a bit, should probably finally suck it up and read some Austen already.
  • Knocked Up - This was a cute movie. It was funny, but not continuously hilarious. I have really mixed feelings about both Seth Rogan and Katherine Heigl but they were convincing in their respective parts in this movie. I was happy to see them come together in the end. It was the friends in this movie that made it for me. Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann killed me. I love them! Ben's friends Jason, Jay, Jonah and Martin were awesome. I love seeing Jason Segel in non-Marshall roles, and it just like to see that kid from Freaks & Geeks still working. Weirdly I only had 2 problems with the movie. One was Ben's dad. Ben says he's Canadian (from BC) and that he's illegally in the US. Yet the fact that his dad is there in L.A. without any explanation bugged me. Second was when Ben was explaining that he was from Vancouver, then he said something about taxes and said "British Columbia". That bugged me because no one says that, "British Columbia". It's BC. Well at least with people I know. Otherwise good movie. Better than Superbad.
  • Wild Hogs - This was a piece of crap movie. I enjoy Tim Allen. I could watch reruns of Home Improvements all the time. I think he's funny. But this was crap. I am also having problems watching John Travolta in anything without seeing him in a pink sequined dress. It's distracting. William H Macy was amusing but ultimately really lame. The best part of this movie? John C McGinley. The whole 2 scenes with him were the funniest, stupidest, best parts. Do Not see this movie. I want my 100 minutes back.

I have 3 more (Fracture, Gosford Park & The Flying Scotsman) sitting on my computer waiting for me to watch them. I think, without really keeping track, I am well on my way to seeing 100 new movies in 2007. Earlier this year, when I didn't have cable Erin from work lent me a lot of movies. I wish I had kept track because now that I have been thinking about it, I want to know where my tally for the year is. Maybe I will go and bug Erin.
